The Purple Tape Files: The Documentary & Film is a retrospective look at Raekwon’s critically acclaimed album, Only Built 4 Cuban Linx, and its impact on modern pop culture. Beyond interviews with notable artists, journalists, industry insiders and music aficionados, the film will also bring never before seen imagery that drove the album’s cult classic status to the big screen.
On August 1, 1995 Raekwon forever changed the course of music history with the release of his debut solo album Only Built 4 Cuban Linx... The groundbreaking project has been enjoyed by fans, celebrated by music critics and studied by contemporary scholars for almost 20 years. Listed by Rolling Stone Magazine as one of the “Top 500 Albums of All Time,” Only Built 4 Cuban Linx... is consistently praised for its cinematic qualities and unforgettable storyline. The ultimate conceptual album, Only Built 4 Cuban Linx... is credited with ushering in the mafioso sub-genre of Hip Hop, and subsequently laying the blueprint for classic albums to follow from Jay-Z, Nas and the Notorious B.I.G.
Hip Hop was forever changed the moment Raekwon the Chef stepped into the booth to record his debut solo album Only Built 4 Cuban Linx... The multi-platinum, Grammy Nominated emcee exploded onto the scene in 1992 as a member of internationally acclaimed collective Wu-Tang Clan, but it would be his debut solo project, that would seal his cult status not only in Hip Hop, but music overall.
Raekwon initially grabbed the hearts, minds and ears of the world on Wu-Tang’s 1993 platinum debut release, Enter the Wu-Tang: 36 Chambers. Spitting gritty bars and delivering street tales of survival, Raekwon successfully distinguished himself from the talented crew. However, it would be the solo album he released just two years later that would change music forever.
In I995 the Chef released Only Built 4 Cuban Linx..., and would prove to be one of the best storytellers and overall lyricist in Hip Hop, a crown he still wears today. Only Built 4 Cuban Linx..., which debuted #4 on the Billboard 200 Chart and #2 on Top R&B/Hip Hop Chart, is narrative album that’s unanimously praised for its evocative image-rich storytelling and cinematic arrangement. The LP was composed to play like a film with Raekwon as the “star,” fellow Wu-Tang member Ghostface Killah as the “guest star” and Wu-Tang producer RZA as the “director.” The album features appearances by Nas and the entire Wu-Tang Clan, with the exception of ODB.
Raj “Trini” Maharaj has been a confidant, business partner and friend of Raekwon for over 20 years. The two are partners on an array of business ventures including the record label imprint IceH2o Canada, where Maharaj is President. Most recently Raekwon and Trini have partnered to form Third Eye Vision, and is serving as Executive Producer.
